10:14 a.m. I just got an email from Bones. Here it is for your reading enjoyment...

Polly,

My Cell phone broke on Friday and I didn't have your number written down it was in my cell phone. I am resigning my position with the company. I received a much better job and pay.
Please send me my paycheck from the cases I did work.

Sorry for the trouble,

Bones

Any suggestions on a nice reply to send to my former investigator?

Bones,

Congrats on your new job. I cut a check for your pay, but my dog ate it.

Sorry for the trouble,

Polly

Maybe you could find out where he's going and beat him out for the job if it's so good.

Short, polite and professional is usually the best way to go with these things. In my experience being the better person on a professional (especially management) level tends to prevent things from coming back and biting me on the ass.

Stephen - yeah, but where's the fun in that?

"Dear Bones. Here's your paycheck - sorry, my dog crapped on it before I mailed it to you (hence the steaming turd included in the box.) Please enjoy yourself at your new job and if you're ever in the neighbourhood, please don't hesitate to go f*ck yourself!
Yours, etc.
Polly.

Bones,

Sorry it took so long for me to repsond. My finger broke today and I don't know how to write with my toes so I had to train my dog to type. Pretty cool, huh? I'd be happy to send you your check ... but the dog ate it. Well ... best of luck.

I find you can never go wrong by quoting Arnold:

"F#ck you, asshole!"

If he had just called or e-mailed you in the first place there'd have been no problem, but since he didn't I see no problem in making him wait a little while... say, until he writes again because he never heard from you.

Then you can be all phony-sorry and tell him he better check his server because you answered him two weeks ago.
